This course focused on the art and function of typography, exploring how letterforms shape meaning, enhance design, and guide communication. In this course we also focused on type anatomy, hierarchy, spacing, and expressive typographic composition through various projects.

Serrated & Divided

This piece creatively manipulates a jagged type to embody the word "Serrated." Rough edges, torn-paper effects, and strong display type pair with a clean body text to create both visual drama and readability, while reinforcing the subject matter through design.

Counter-Space Flow

This typographic exploration transforms the letters "Q" and "S" in addition with the letter's "w" and "m" into an abstract visual flow, emphasizing Western left-to-right reading habits. Implementing letter rotation and scaling create a seamless river of information, where text placement and counter-spaces lead the viewer’s eye naturally across the design.

Power in Words

Using typography as imagery, this design forms a raised fist—a symbol of empowerment —out of text related to women’s rights and historic movements. Strategic size, weight, and placement of type visually reinforce the message of unity, activism, and social change.

"Lenina"

Exploring positive and negative space, this composition uses cropped letterforms to create a dynamic tension between form and void/negative space to create my name, Lenina. The stark black and white contrast enhances the abstract beauty of typography and challenges readability in a controlled, artistic way.

Letter J

Focusing on the history of the letter "J" and the history of Garamond, this radial composition uses flowing, spiraled text to guide viewers around historical facts of both elements. Strategic typographic emphasis (like bolding and color changes) highlights key names and dates while maintaining visual rhythm.

Indyhumane: A Heart for Fostering

In this brochure cover for IndyHumane, a friendly, rounded sans-serif typeface delivers warmth and approachability. Bold headings paired with soft background elements ensure clarity and brand consistency, while strategic type sizing leads viewers from message to action smoothly.

Pathway to Creativity

This event poster utilizes a dynamic type of hierarchy, mixing serif and sans-serif fonts to separate important information. The clean alignment and visual flow between elements help guide the viewer through event details while playful curves mimic the energy of the exhibition while maintaining brand guidelines.
